For the report, Press Ganey examined patient experience data on 6.5 million patient encounters from more than 2,000 health systems and 490,000 medical office sites nationwide.
Most specialties are reporting sustained patient experience improvements since the pandemic, according to Press Ganey. Overall, specialties that involve planned inpatient admissions had higher “likelihood to recommend” scores than those with unplanned admissions in 2023.
Five specialties with the highest patient experience scores in 2023:
- Cardiac surgery — 79.3% of patients were likely to recommend the hospital
- Obstetrics — 76.7%
- Obstetrics/gynecology — 75.9%
- Neurosurgery — 75.9%
- Orthopedics — 75.5%
Four specialties with the lowest patient experience scores in 2023:
- Trauma — 65.8% of patients were likely to recommend the hospital
- Telemetry — 65.4%
- Medical — 64.4%
- Medical telemetry — 63.8%
