Harvard, mPulse Mobile to study health plan, patient texting

Healthcare policy researchers at Boston-based Harvard Medical School will join forces with mPulse Mobile to study whether texting can improve patient engagement in Medicaid populations.

The researchers will embark on two projects, both funded by the California Health Care Foundation, an organization that aims to improve healthcare delivery for underserved Californians. The two projects will assess the effectiveness of interactive, tailored text messages on Gold Coast Health Plan's Medicaid members.

The first project will evaluate whether tailored text messages help new members — who may have trouble navigating their benefits — select an in-network primary care clinician for preventive care services. The second project will encourage members with chronic conditions to enroll in disease management programs, using interactive text messages.

"I've spent much of my career studying the ability of different interventions to drive advancements in population health management," Ateev Mehrotra, MD, a program researcher and associate professor of healthcare policy and medicine at Harvard Medical School, said in a news release. "There is a major need for innovation in care delivery and how we can engage patients outside of just the office visit."
