Alabama hospital offers patients waiting room survival kits

Birmingham, Ala.-based Brookwood Baptist Medical Center is recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month by giving select patients waiting room survival kits throughout September, reports Fox affiliate WBRC.

The Brookwood Baptist Hospital Cancer Center is handing out the kits to patients waiting to be screened or treated for breast cancer. The kits contain a snack, bottle of water, a crossword containing mammography terms, and stories from cancer survivors.

Janet Dees, BSN, RN, a breast nurse navigator at the center, said the kits help comfort patients and boost awareness about breast cancer screening.

"It helps get their mind off it," she told WBRC. "Things go well for breast cancer patients when we can find it early, which brings us back to the reminder to get your mammograms."
