For the study, researchers reviewed previously published literature and found obese patients have double the rate of infection following total knee replacement surgery and double the rate of revision surgeries compared to non-obese patients. In addition, obese patients have a higher rate of infection for both superficial and deep infections.
The researchers advise orthopedists not to withhold knee replacement surgeries from obese patients, rather inform patients of the likelihood of complications following the procedure.
