Woman accused of pretending to be nurse in 8 states charged, denied bond

A woman has been charged in Georgia with stealing the identity of a Florida nurse and using the stolen nursing license to care for patients, wsbtv.com reported June 6.

Corissa Laws was employed as a licensed nurse with Austell, Ga.-based Walton Community Services, where she cared for eight people with disabilities who needed care from a licensed nurse. She obtained the job by using the license number of a nurse in Florida, the report said.

The prosecutor at Ms. Laws' bond hearing said she admitted to practicing as a nurse in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Florida, Georgia and New Mexico. She has an active warrant for her arrest in Vermont and pending charges in Florida, according to the report.

Ms. Laws' attorney said the focus should be on his client's employer.

"There is an investigation into Walton Community Services for them committing fraud and sending nurses out to practice nursing without a license," he told the publication.

The judge denied Ms. Laws bond. She will remain in Cobb County jail until trial.
