Mississippi is next state chasing full scope of practice for nurses

Advanced practice nurses in Mississippi could see their roles expand, allowing for full scope of practice authority as soon as July if lawmakers there back the proposal.

The proposed change, Senate Bill 2079, is currently part of the Mississippi Legislature's 2024 regular session and is currently under review by the Public Health and Welfare committee. It requires a majority vote to pass and would go into effect July 1, 2024, if it moves forward.

Nurse practitioners in the state would be exempt from working alongside a physician for supervision after three years of practice, according to the bill.

Mississippi could become the 28th state to enact such a law, expanding the scope of practice for advanced practice registered nurses. Utah was the most recent state to do so, passing similar legislation in 2023.
