The proposed change, Senate Bill 2079, is currently part of the Mississippi Legislature’s 2024 regular session and is currently under review by the Public Health and Welfare committee. It requires a majority vote to pass and would go into effect July 1, 2024, if it moves forward.
Nurse practitioners in the state would be exempt from working alongside a physician for supervision after three years of practice, according to the bill.
Mississippi could become the 28th state to enact such a law, expanding the scope of practice for advanced practice registered nurses. Utah was the most recent state to do so, passing similar legislation in 2023.
