Hackensack Meridian Health creates institute for nursing leadership, student loan relief program

A donation from the founder and CEO of Jersey Mike's sandwich franchise supported the launch of a new institute for nursing leadership and practice excellence at Edison, N.J.-based Hackensack Meridian Health.

The Sheila Cancro Institute for Nursing Leadership and Practice Excellence aims to support nurses' career growth and education through programs and resources focused on leadership, and on improved healthcare experiences for patients and nursing staff, according to a June 15 news release. The donation also supported the creation of a career initiative that will provide up to $35,000 in student loan forgiveness to recipients who pledge to work with the health system for at least three years upon graduation.

The institute is named after Sheila Cancro, a former nurse's aide. She is the mother of Peter Cancro, founder and CEO of Jersey Mike's. The donation amount was not disclosed.
