Survey: 54% of Employers Increasing Worker Responsibility to Handle Health Costs

Most employers have employed cost-sharing strategies that shift more financial responsibility to workers to manage healthcare costs, according to the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions 2013 Survey of U.S. Employers.

moneyThe survey found 54 percent of employers use increased employee financial responsibility as a way to reduce healthcare costs, and 38 percent think that strategy has a high impact on reducing costs.

Here are some more key findings:

1. Of those surveyed, 75 percent think hospital costs are a major driver of overall healthcare system costs.

2. Only one in three employers (33 percent) feel their human resources department is completely prepared to navigate the changing healthcare landscape.

3. The second-most popular cost management tactic is health improvement, with 39 percent of employers saying they currently use it and 25 percent identifying it as a high-impact cost management strategy.
