NAPA Researcher Discusses Alarm Management Issues

At the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation annual conference in Charlotte, N.C., June 3, Frank J. Overdyk, MSEE, MD, executive director for research at North American Partners in Anesthesia and professor of anesthesiology at Hofstra University School of Medicine in Hempstead, N.Y., co-presented alarm management issues (pdf).

The presentation, “Alarm Management: What are the Issues? The Urgent Need for Continuous, Multi-Channel Monitoring With Smart Alarms,” included studies on the role of alarm fatigue in preventable patient harm and death. The adoption of “smart” alarms with continuous monitoring was presented as a solution.
