Dr. Rajamannan alleged that Patrick McCarthy, MD, implanted an experimental annuloplasty ring called the Myxo ring in one of her patients without patient consent and that the ring’s manufacturer Edwards Lifesciences circumvented the FDA approval process.
Northwestern University claims Dr. Rajamannan was dismissed because she was denied tenure. Dr. Rajamannan, however, says she was fired because she found evidence that one of her patients who was implanted with the Myxo ring by Dr. McCarthy had a myocardial infarction shortly after surgery. This finding would contradict Dr. McCarthy’s published claim that no patients with the implantations had MIs.
