West Penn Allegheny Sues UPMC and Highmark, Alleges Antitrust Violations

West Penn Allegheny Health System has filed suit against its competitor, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and health insurer Highmark, alleging they conspired to drive competitors out of business, according to a report in the Star-Tribune.

West Penn Allegheny claims that Highmark reimburses UPMC at an inflated rate and, in return, UPMC refuses to contract with other health insurers at reasonable rates. West Penn Allegheny, which received lower rates for services, claims to have experienced an unfair economic disadvantage due to the alleged agreement, according to the report.

UPMC and Highmark deny the allegations.
