Texas nurse sues elevator company for $1M+ after multiple safety incidents

A Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth nurse filed a lawsuit worth more than $1 million against an elevator company after one of its elevators fell several stories and injured her, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Four things to know:

1. Rogena Wright, RN, who is also an administrative supervisor at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Alliance in Fort Worth, sued the hospital's elevator company, Thyssenkrupp Elevator Corp., and two elevator inspectors for more than $1 million. She claimed in the lawsuit that the entities did not properly maintain the elevator or detect a dangerous condition in the elevator.

2. According to the lawsuit, Ms. Wright was riding in an elevator at the Alliance hospital on Jan. 23, 2018, when the elevator fell several stories and injured her in a "violent landing." Ms. Wright claimed she suffered herniated discs, lower back pain, an ankle injury, bruised arms and several other injuries that have kept her from working.

3. The lawsuit alleges the elevator company also had issues with elevators at other hospitals before and after the incident that injured Ms. Wright. While the lawsuit does not name any specific incidents, the CEO of Fort Worth, Texas-based John Peter Smith Hospital called out Thyssenkrupp in January for similar elevator issues at the hospital that are "unacceptable and [jeopardize] the safety of our patients and team members."

4. A Thyssenkrupp spokesperson told the Star-Telegram the company does not comment on pending litigation.
