Senior Citizens Responsible for $9.1M in Medicare, Medicaid Fraud Recoveries

Senior Medicare Patrols are expected to help contribute $9.1 million in Medicare and Medicaid recoveries in 2013 through their work with CMS contractors, according to a recent report from HHS' Office of the Inspector General.

The SMP program is operated by the Administration of Aging in partnership with CMS and the OIG. It helps to empower seniors to prevent, detect and report healthcare fraud and relies on more than 5,400 volunteers across the country.

SMP projects in California are expected to contribute $8.9 million in recoveries for 2013, which is far more than any other state, according to the report.

The $9.1 million in expected recoveries for 2013 is a 50 percent increase from 2012.
