S.C. abortion bill hits road block

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) was quoted by The New York Times Tuesday saying she “can’t imagine a scenario in which she wouldn’t sign” the proposed bill banning abortion past 20 weeks. However, she may not get a chance to sign it.

The bill is now stuck in the South Carolina House because of a conflicting detail between the Senate and House versions of the bill, according to a Live 5 News report. The Senate bill bans abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy except when the woman’s life is at risk or if the child would not live outside the womb, according to the report. The House version of the bill only includes the exception for the mother’s life, according to the report.

Due to this small difference, the House has to pass the bill with a minimum of 83 votes so it can go to a conference committee, according to the report. The bill only got 80 votes, so it has to be brought up again and passed, or reintroduced next year, according to the report.
