Police are investigating a shooting that occurred May 20 outside the emergency department at UPMC McKeesport (Pa.), part of Pittsburgh-based UPMC.
The Allegheny County Police Department responded to the incident around 3:15 a.m. and found an adult male who had been shot, according to a statement on the department’s Facebook page.
A department spokesperson told Becker’s the incident involved two individuals in the hospital’s parking lot; the shooting victim was attempting to enter a vehicle and was shot by a second individual.
In a statement shared with Becker’s, a health system spokesperson said UPMC Police in the emergency department quickly responded to the incident, aiding local police in apprehending the person allegedly responsible.
According to police, the UPMC officer fired in response to the shooting, but at this time, it does not appear anyone was struck by the officer’s gunfire.
The victim was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. No other injuries were reported.
The emergency department at UPMC McKeesport remains open. However, Magee-Womens Specialty Services at UPMC McKeesport, located inside the hospital, sustained damage during the incident and will be closed to patients May 20, the UPMC spokesperson said.
UPMC is contacting patients to reschedule appointments.
