Ohio governor restricts transgender care after vetoing bill against it

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed an executive order on Jan. 5 banning anyone under the age of 18 from receiving gender-transition surgeries at any Ohio hospital or ambulatory surgical facility.

The news comes after Mr. DeWine vetoed House Bill 68 — the Saving Ohio Adolescents from Experimentation and Save Women's Sports acts — which would have limited gender-affirming care for minors and mandated single-sex sports teams at colleges in Ohio.

"Although I vetoed Substitute House Bill 68, I stated clearly in my Veto Message that I agreed with the General Assembly that no gender transition surgeries should be performed on anyone under the age of 18 and I directed agencies under my purview to draft rules to ban this practice in Ohio," Mr. DeWine said in the executive order.

The order will expire 120 days after it goes into effect.

Mr. DeWine's original veto of House Bill 68 can also be overridden by Ohio House and Senate members in a three-fifths vote.
