During an overnight shift on June 20, 2022, Judith Maria Sobol allegedly treated the patient — who was on a ventilator — while under the influence of methamphetamines. The patient’s parents found Ms. Sobol incoherent early the next morning, state officials said, and their child was unresponsive, with her trachea tube disconnected.
Ms. Sobol faces charges of second-degree murder and possession of methamphetamines/ecstasy, and her license was suspended in November 2022. Along with permanently revoking her license, the Michigan Board of Nursing imposed a $150,000 fine against Ms. Sobol.
She is currently being held on a $500,000 bond, and her trial is set to start Feb. 21.
