New Jersey Physiatrist Dr. Dov Rand Pleads Guilty to Accepting Kickbacks

New Jersey physician Dov Rand, MD, has admitted to accepting cash in exchange for making Medicare and Medicaid patient referrals and pleaded guilty to one count of violating the federal antikickback statute.

Dr. Rand, a physiatrist, was arrested in December 2011 and charged with accepting cash from Orange (N.J.) Community MRI in exchange for his patient referrals. The physician admitted to receiving cash kickbacks on more than one occasion in October and November 2011.

Orange MRI's executive director, Chirag Patel, was also arrested in December 2011 in connection with the scheme, along with 12 other New Jersey physicians and one nurse practitioner.

Dr. Rand is the second person arrested in connection to the scheme to plead guilty. Nurse practitioner Jose Castaneda pleaded guilty in April. On May 4, another physician charged in the scheme — Yash Khanna, MD — was indicted by a federal grand jury on one count of accepting kickbacks. Charges are pending for the others arrested.

Dr. Rand's sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 13.
