Mayor de Blasio defends donation from developer involved in LICH bid

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio defended soliciting $20,000 in funds from a real estate development firm while it was allegedly bidding on a project to redevelop Brooklyn, N.Y.-based Long Island College Hospital, according to a DNAinfo report.

In May, DNAinfo New York reported Mayor de Blasio asked the head of the real estate development firm, Peebles Corporation, for a donation to his political nonprofit while the state evaluated bids for the LICH site.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office is investigating the mayor’s involvement in the sale of LICH. Federal officials issued subpoenas for emails from Mayor de Blasio and his aides to see if they violated any laws, according to the report.

Mayor de Blasio said the fact that Peebles Corporation didn’t win the bid for the project proved that the decision was made “in the public interest and not because of political donations,” according to the report.
