Louisiana physician pleads guilty in $5.6M fraud scheme

A Louisiana physician pleaded guilty to defrauding Medicare out of $5.6 million by ordering medically unnecessary durable medical equipment and cancer genetic testing.

Alex Glotser, MD, 36, of Metairie, signed thousands of physicians orders for Medicare beneficiaries he never met while working as an independent contractor for several telemedicine companies from September 2017 to August 2019, according to an Oct. 24 Justice Department news release. 

Medicare reimbursed more than $2.4 million of the $5.6 million in fraudulent claims Dr. Glotser submitted, according to the release. 

He faces up to 10 years in prison and is required to pay $2.42 million in restitution to Medicare.
