Legislation Introduced to Extend CHIP Funding

New legislation, introduced by Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.), would extend funding for the Children's Health Insurance Program through Sept. 30, 2019.

CHIP funding is set to expire in 2015, and the CHIP Extension Act of 2014 would extend the funding for four more years. The Act would also do the following:

  • Automatically enroll newborns in CHIP

  • Help improve access to immunizations and other preventive services currently not covered by the program

  • Create better transitions between CHIP, Medicaid and qualified health plans

  • Extend the Maternal, Infant and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program, which is also set to expire in 2015

  • Help facilitate improved tracking of cost-sharing requirements

  • Help build on pediatric quality measures that already exist in CHIP
