The lawsuit was filed Aug. 19 by immigration advocates in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, according to the report. It claims Immigration and Customs Enforcement is deliberately denying medical care to 55,000 immigrants at public and private centers, which has resulted in permanent harm and 24 deaths, according to a review of the lawsuit by Politico.
ICE’s Health Services Corps covers about 13,500 detainees, while the rest of the care is provided by contractors, according to the report.
Many of the detention facilities are in areas that already need more physicians, according to the report.
