Kentucky physician sentenced to 4 years in prison for billing fraud, unlawful opioid prescribing

A district court judge on Monday sentenced a physician from Louisville, Ky., to 48 months in prison for the unlawful distribution of controlled substances and healthcare fraud.

George Kudmani, MD, an obstetrician-gynecologist, was convicted on nineteen counts of unlawfully distributing controlled substances and eight counts of healthcare fraud in January. Dr. Kudmani prescribed hydrocodone and oxycodone without legitimate medical reasons between July 2009 and September 2012, according to the conviction.

"Despite his physician's oath to do no harm, Dr. George Kudmani recklessly prescribed opioids, for no legitimate medical purpose, to patients suffering from substance use disorders," stated U.S. Attorney John Kuhn. "I hope today's sentence … will send a message to physicians that prescribing opioids outside the scope of legitimate medical care will be punished."

Dr. Kudmani was also convicted of fraudulently billing Kentucky Medicaid over the same time period for transvaginal ultrasounds that were medically unnecessary or not performed.
