The case stems from an incident last fall in which a man requested no African-American nurses care for his newborn son. According to the complaint, no African-American nurses were assigned to the patient for the next month, and a note with the man’s request was included in the baby’s chart. The hospital settled a suit with the baby’s original nurse in February, and has just reached an agreement with the EEOC.
The settlement agreement includes diversity training for the hospital’s 1,600 employees. The hospital will also develop educational programs for local students interested in healthcare, and provide an annual $2,000 scholarship for a graduate of the program, according to the report.
