The House Veterans Affairs Committee voiced its support to improve the current structure of government hospitals and private physicians able to provide care to veterans, according to the Military Times.

However, members of the committee differed on how to effectively implement the 18 recommendations released by the Commission on Care in July. The Commission on Care is the agency responsible for investigating and suggesting improvements to veterans’ medical services and the Veterans Health Administration, according to the article.

Some of the commission’s recommendations included: creating a healthcare system of government facilities and private networks, installing a board of directors to watch over VHA leadership and closing underused VA facilities.

The committee actively opposed any efforts to eliminate eligibility restrictions for the Veterans Choice program, according to the article. Reforms to the program have received staunch bi-partisan support from members of Congress and VA officials.

Committee officials also stressed the importance of closing the more than 200 unused VA facilities across the U.S. Some members of Congress said closing the facilities would negatively impact many communities. Others, however, said they were open to considering the change, according to the article.
