The paper reviews the path that UMHS took in creating the honesty-based, patient safety-focused approach; identifies the essential practical components of the Michigan Model; offers suggestions for tailoring the approach to other settings and presents thoughts on the future of this approach. Seven healthcare organizations in Massachusetts and the Massachusetts Medical Society recently announced they would adopt and tailor this approach for a pilot program designed to improve the medical liability system in the state of Massachusetts.
