Holtz Children’s Heart Center’s State Approval Status in Jeopardy

Holtz Children’s Hospital in Miami has experienced a decline in number of heart surgeries performed annually that may jeopardize its status as a state-approved provider for the most critically ill children, according to a Miami Herald report.

The Florida Department of Health’s Division of Children’s Medical Services requires that approved cardiac facilities perform at least 150 surgeries annually, a target Holtz Children’s did not meet last year, according to the report.

Hospital administrators voluntarily put the program on probation, according to the report. If surgeries drop below 100, state standards would require regulators to disapprove the facility, according to the report.

The decline in surgeries performed was most likely caused by declining birthrates in the area, increased competition from other hospitals and the departure of one of the hospital’s pediatric cardiac surgeon, according to the report.
