Former Detroit Medical Center CEO Arrested in Panama

This week, Interpol officials arrested Arthur Porter, MD, former CEO of Detroit Medical Center from 1999 through 2003, in Panama, and he now faces extradition to Canada related to criminal charges while he headed a Canadian health system, according to a Detroit Free Press report.

Canadian officials have charged Dr. Porter on several fronts, including allegations of fraud and money laundering while he was executive director of McGill University's Health Centre in Montreal, according to the report.

Dr. Porter resigned from DMC in 2003 as the hospital system hemorrhaged millions of dollars, laid off thousands of employees and sold off assets. He started at DMC in 1991 as a radiation oncologist, and DMC officials said Dr. Porter was never suspected of any foul play during his time there.
