Florida 'butt lift' surgeon disputes state's attempt to revoke license

Osakatukei "Osak" Omulepu, MD — a Florida cosmetic surgeon who has been accused of injuring four female patients during liposuction and "Brazilian butt lift" surgeries — has filed documents to dispute the Florida Department of Health's attempts to revoke his medical license, according to the Miami Herald.

In a state complaint, the four patients — all of whom underwent surgery in May 2015 and were between the ages of 29 and 35 — accused Dr. Omulepu of causing them injuries that required hospitalization from three days to three months.

He was charged with "[using] the wrong concentration of a local anesthetic," "[perforating] patients' organs" and "[failing] to discharge patients to a facility capable of providing appropriate care," according to the report.

Prior to accusations against him, Dr. Omulepu practiced at Miami-based Spectrum-Aesthetics Center for Cosmetic Surgery and Miami-based Vanity Cosmetic Surgery. In a promotional video for his practice, he said he was "very aggressive when it comes to liposuction."

In February of this year, the Florida Department of Health issued an emergency order that prevented Dr. Omulepu from performing any type of surgery. Now, Dr. Omulepu has set out to dispute the charges made against him. Although he declined to comment, his attorney, Richard T. Woulfe, said Dr. Omulepu will challenge "most of the factual claims made by the department," according to the report.

Dr. Omulepu's disputation will be reviewed by the Florida Division of Administrative Hearings. The DAH will then present a recommendation on the situation to the Florida Board of Medicine, though the board doesn't have to follow its recommendation.
