Emory allegedly billed Medicare and Medicaid for medical care and other clinical trial services paid for by the trial’s sponsors, and was paid twice for some services.

“Our investigation of Emory University revealed the institution’s clinical trial false billing and led to today’s settlement,” said Derrick L. Jackson, special agent in charge of HHS’ Office of Inspector General for the Atlanta region, in a news release.  “Protecting Medicare — and taxpayer dollars — remains a top priority.”

The whistle-blower suit was brought forth by a former Emory employee, who will receive a portion of the settlement.
