Here are some key findings from the study:
• In 2011, 48 percent of healthcare professionals said they use social media for professional networking — 11 percent more than 2010.
• When searching for a job, 31 percent of 2011 respondents said they used social media — an increase of 10 percent from 2010. Allied professionals and nurses were most likely to use social media for these purposes, while physicians were less frequent users.
• Nurses averaged about 4.5 months to find a job in 2011. This figure was the briefest compared to allied professionals’ 5.5 months, physicians’ 5.7 months and pharmacists’ 8.8 months.
• The top job search methods in 2011 were:
o Referrals: 70 percent
o Direct contact: 64 percent
o Search engines: 60 percent
o Online job boards: 57 percent
• The most popular social media sites for professional networking in healthcare in 2011 were:
o Facebook: 41 percent
o YouTube: 29 percent
o LinkedIn: 23 percent
o Twitter: 11 percent
o FourSquare: 3 percent
