Mike Russell, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Texas Spine and Joint Hospital in Tyler, Texas, has become PHA president. Dr. Russell replaces, Brett Gosney, CEO of Animas Surgical Hospital, who will stay on the board of directors as its immediate past-President. Paul Kerens, senior executive of Kansas City Orthopedic Institute, has been named president-elect.

Keri Bolte, 28, the association’s member-services manager, will become interim executive director on Dec. 1 and the board will begin searching for a permanent director to replace Molly Sandvig, who recently announced her resignation.

PHA and Texas Spine and Joint Hospital are co-plaintiffs in a lawsuit challenging the ban on new physician–owned hospitals in the healthcare reform law. Oral arguments for the lawsuit will be heard on Sept. 29. The hospital invested almost $3 million in permits and licenses to build a new $27 million facility, but the project was suspended before breaking ground.
