Convicted lab owner ordered to forfeit $187M in fraud proceeds

A Georgia lab owner convicted for his role in a $463 million fraud scheme was ordered to forfeit more than $187 million in fraud proceeds.

Minal Patel, 44, owner of LabSolutions, was sentenced in August to 27 years in prison after being found guilty of conspiring to submit claims for genetic and other laboratory testing that patients did not need. LabSolutions submitted more than $463 million in claims to Medicare, of which more than $187 million was paid. Mr. Patel received more than $21 million in connection with the scheme.

The forfeiture ordered by a Florida federal judge included more than $30 million from personal and corporate bank accounts, a Ferrari, a Range Rover and other property, according to an Oct. 3 Justice Department news release.
