Commission defends integrating VA care, outside physicians

The Commission on Care, the agency responsible for overseeing the Veterans Affairs Committee, defended its 18 point treatment plan to reform the VA healthcare system in a meeting with Congressional representatives on Sept. 12, according to The Progress Index.

Commission chair Nancy Schlichting outlined numerous weaknesses inherent to the system, including understaffing a various VA facilities, obsolete IT departments and equipment, flawed operating processes and supply chain weaknesses that threaten the viability of the program, according to the article.

Some members of Congress criticized the commission’s call to privatize part of the VA system, arguing that more veterans would choose private sector care, driving up VA costs and jeopardizing the “unique…health services” offered by VA medical facilities specifically to treat veterans, according to the article.

Ms. Schlichting said the commission had discussed implementing a phased approach to test the commission’s choice model and the potential impact it may have on VA budgets and programs before fully implementing the reforms.

Representative Jeff Miller (R-Fla.) also voiced his concern over the creation of a new oversight committee. One of the commission’s suggestions included establishing a new board of directors who would have the authority to create a long-term strategy for the organization and would ensure that plans be carried out by a VA undersecretary of health.

Ms. Schlichting said the system needs an undersecretary for health to demand adherence to strategic initiatives outlined by the board. Congressional oversight, she said, wasn’t enough, according to the article.

Despite protests, congressional members have been largely receptive to the commission’s reform proposals.
