Roughly 40 people gathered outside of Glendale (Calif.) Adventist Medical Center to peacefully protest the hospital’s decision to ban vaginal-breech delivery procedures, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The demonstration was organized by the Encinitas, Calif.-based activist group Improving Birth. Demonstrators said they hoped the protest would pressure the hospital to reverse the decision, according to the article. Protesters said the ban limits the number of options pregnant women have when giving birth.

Hospital officials said the ban is meant to ensure a safer delivery process for women whose babies are in vaginal breech, a rare instance in which a baby is delivered feet first rather than head first. Vice President of Clinical Services and CNO Karen Brandt-Mayo said the ban will only affect a small number of births. Of the 2,400 deliveries at the hospital in 2015, nine involved vaginal-breech births, according to the article.
