The sites fraudulently imitated the Covered California site to lure consumers away from health plans offered under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, Ms. Harris said in a news release. She urged state residents to visit the official site, coveredca.com.
The state attorney general’s office began investigating the imitation sites in September and sent cease and desist letters to their operators, according to the release. The sites were run by private health insurance brokers or companies not affiliated with the actual exchange and had domain names similar to the official exchange site.
All website operators the attorney general contacted have complied, and the sites have either been deactivated or redirected to the actual exchange site, according to the release.
