Boston Children’s settles for $15M after baby dies during sleep study

Boston Children's Hospital has reviewed its sleep study protocols after a child died following what The Boston Globe called May 1 "a devastating series of errors."

Six-month-old Jackson Kekula died in 2022 during a sleep study at the hospital. His death led to a $15 million settlement with his parents, one of the largest such medical malpractice settlements ever in Massachusetts, the family lawyer said.

The hospital expressed its "deepest condolences" to the family. Sleep studies were paused for five weeks after the incident for an internal review, and the hospital implemented corrective actions such as enhanced training and modification of the triage process. The studies were reinstated in phases after the review.

"We continue to closely monitor the care delivery of sleep studies to ensure the highest levels of quality and safety for our patients and their families," Boston Children's said in a statement shared with Becker's.
