As CMS considers requiring hospitals to obtain a unique national provider identifier for each hospital outpatient provider department, the American Hospital Association is urging the agency to alleviate the process.
In February, President Donald Trump signed the Consolidated Appropriations Act into law. A notable provision of the law requires every off-campus outpatient provider department to have a separate national provider identifier, also known as NPI, as a condition of federal reimbursement.
The AHA has raised concerns about this idea for years, claiming it is unnecessary and would be administratively burdensome for both providers and Medicare’s contractors.
In a March 24 letter to CMS, the AHA said, “We strongly urge the agency to implement these provisions in the least burdensome way possible and avoid subjecting hospitals and health systems, or CMS and its contractors, to lengthy and overly complex processes.”
