Although the formal title of the occupation may vary, many hospitals are hiring staff to oversee their social media presence, communicate with patients through social media, and teach physicians about legal concerns and how to properly use tools such as Facebook and Twitter. The average annual salary for social media managers ranges from $60,000 to $80,000.

Despite the explosion of social media staff within the industry, some hospital executives have not yet come to terms with how profound and pervasive social media has become. A lack of executive interest is partially due to the minimal availability of data linking financial results to social media, according to the report.
