Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, Calif., recently added an on-site microbiology laboratory designed to deliver faster diagnostic results, according to a Jan. 22 news release shared with Becker’s.
The lab, which began processing patient samples Jan. 21, can reduce time to lab results within hours, and in some cases days, the release said. Quicker identification of time-sensitive infections such as sepsis can shorten hospital stays. It also supports antibiotic stewardship, as antibiotic resistance is a growing public health issue.
“This lab may be small in size, but its impact on patient care is significant,” Good Samaritan Hospital CEO Patrick Rohan said Jan. 20, according to the release. “Faster microbiology results mean patients receive the right treatment sooner, avoid unnecessary antibiotics and can move more efficiently through the care system.”
