Physician viewpoint: 4 principles for improving healthcare on a global scale

Healthcare systems around the world vary widely in their operations and challenges, but most share similar evolutionary pressures that can be addressed on a global scale using four guiding principles, according to Dave Chokshi, MD.

Dr. Chokshi, the chief population health officer for NYC Health + Hospitals, outlined those principles in a recent Harvard Business Review article. Fostering this type of global convergence, he wrote, will result in the “rapid diffusion of innovation” throughout diverse communities around the world, along with the spread of lower-cost, higher-quality medical interventions.

The four principles, which serve as the backbone to Dr. Chokshi’s population health strategy, are:

  • Identify and stratify the population served by a health system
  • Ground the health system in high-quality, community-based care
  • Meet patients where they are, both physically and in terms of their specific health needs
  • Use valid, actionable data to guide care delivery and drive improvement
