Health systems to test gen AI 'healthcare provider'

More than 40 provider groups, health systems and digital health companies will begin internal testing of a generative AI-powered "healthcare provider" developed by Hippocratic AI.

Houston-based Memorial Hermann Health System; Burlington-based University of Vermont Health Network; Surrey, B.C.-based Fraser Health; and Orinda, Calif.-based Side Health are among the healthcare organizations testing this large language model, according to a Feb. 29 news release from Hippocratic AI.

The organizations will test if the large language model from Hippocratic AI is safe and effective prior to its general availability, and will start with testing it on specific conditions such as congestive heart failure and kidney disease.

Physicians, nurses and other key front-line healthcare professionals will lead the testing processes at the health systems, according to the release.

"We believe this technology can help with workforce shortages by taking on some of the more basic tasks to support workflow. For example, calling a patient to provide pre-operative instructions or following a procedure for post-discharge checkups," Feby Abraham, PhD, executive vice president and chief strategy and innovations officer for Memorial Hermann, said in the release. "We are always looking for new ways to further engage our employees and make them feel better supported. The unique challenges of recent years have only heightened the need for innovation in this area."
