NYU Langone, healthcare workers reach contract agreement

New York City-based NYU Langone Health has reached a new contract agreement with healthcare workers, according to union representatives.

The agreement covers nearly 7,500 members of 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East. Members serve in Manhattan at NYU Langone-Tisch and NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, and at NYU Langone-Brooklyn. They include patient care technicians, technologists, physical therapists and other workers.

"NYU is a world-class hospital because of the quality of its workforce, and we need and deserve world-class healthcare benefits," Shaneka Castro-Birden, an operating room scheduler at NYU Langone-Tisch, said in a news release.

The agreement comes after months of negotiations and multiple contract extensions, according to the union. It maintains health benefits and includes annual pay raises during the contract term. NYU, which has rejoined the League of Voluntary Hospitals and Homes, also has agreed to continue its payments into the union pension and benefit funds.

NYU Langone spokesperson Lisa Greiner told Becker's hospital administrators "worked hard in achieving an agreement with our employees .. which included re-establishing our relationship with league."
