Nurses picket at Tenet hospitals in Arizona, California and Florida

Registered nurses are holding informational pickets May 28 outside Arizona, California and Florida hospitals owned by Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare, the union representing them announced in a news release.

The California Nurses Association /National Nurses Organizing Committee — a National Nurses United affiliate that represents more than 6,200 nurses at Tenet facilities across the U.S. — said nurses are calling on management to invest in nursing staff to improve the recruitment and retention of experienced RNs and ensure quality patient care.

Nurses are picketing at these 12 Tenet hospitals:

  • St. Joseph's Hospital (Tucson, Ariz.)
  • St. Mary's Hospital (Tucson)
  • Palmetto General Hospital (Hialeah, Fla.)
  • Florida Medical Center (Lauderdale Lakes)
  • Hi-Desert Medical Center (Joshua Tree, Calif.)
  • Los Alamitos (Calif.) Medical Center
  • Doctors Medical Center of Modesto (Calif.)
  • Desert Regional Medical Center (Palm Springs, Calif.)
  • Sierra Vista Regional Med Center (San Luis Obispo, Calif.)
  • San Ramon (Calif.) Regional Medical Center
  • Twin Cities Community Hospital (Templeton, Calif.)
  • Emanuel Medical Center (Turlock, Calif.)

Union officials said nurses from Tenet-affiliated hospitals of Providence, Sierra and Memorial campuses in El Paso, Texas also have scheduled a rally for May 28.

Tenet expressed disappointment about the picketing plans.

"Our hospitals are fully operational and our staff’s focus, as always, is on providing exceptional quality patient care," Todd Burke, communications director for Tenet's California hospitals, told Becker's.

"We are disappointed that the union is taking this approach as it is not constructive or necessary. We have made good progress toward a new contract with the union and will continue to negotiate in good faith in hopes of reaching a successful resolution, without the need to disrupt our patients or staff in their mission," he added.
