How closing a 491-bed Ohio hospital will affect its 1,600 employees

Dayton, Ohio-based Good Samaritan Hospital has provided care to local residents for the past 90 years. However, the facility is set to close July 23, myDayton Daily News reports.

The 491-bed hospital's parent company, Dayton-based Premier Health, announced its intent to close the hospital in January, citing the inability to operate two hospitals just 5 miles apart amid dwindling admissions.

However, the planned closure has raised concerns regarding the fates of the hospital's 1,600 employees and the 38,600 people for whom Good Samaritan is the closest hospital.

Premier Health said in its initial closing statement the health system planned to offer all 1,600 Good Samaritan employees positions at its various other facilities. As of last week, Premier issued 1,400 job offers to Good Samaritan employees, and 1,200 individuals have accepted positions so far.

"It's important, being the largest private employer in Dayton, that we were really able to make this commitment," Barbara Johnson, chief human resources officer and system vice president, told the publication.

"We understood there were going to be all sorts of attempts to recruit our staff, not only locally but also regionally and nationally. And we knew it was going to be emotional for employees and some might self-select out," she added.

The competing Dayton-based Kettering Health Network reported it had hired 100 Good Samaritan employees for its hospital in Dayton, according to the report.
