Cashiers at Mayo campuses vote to join SEIU

Cashiers at Mayo Clinic's Saint Marys and Methodist campuses  in Rochester, Minn., voted in favor of unionization, according to a Workday Minnesota report.

The vote covers 26 cashiers employed by Morrison Healthcare, who are joining Service Employees International Union Healthcare Minnesota.

Workers' unanimous vote follows Mayo Clinic's decision to switch from Sodexo to Morrison Healthcare for food and nutrition services. Other workers at Mayo Clinic hospitals have also joined the union since the decision, according to the report.

Ida Bush, a Morrison employee and longtime cashier at Mayo Clinic, told Workday Minnesota of the latest vote, "I felt that we needed a voice at work, and I want the same opportunities that people in the union have had."

While Mayo Clinic cannot comment directly about issues between Morrison Healthcare and SEIU, the organization did tell Becker's, "Our focus remains on ensuring that Mayo patients and visitors receive the best possible food service experience, and we continue to work closely with Morrison on ensuring the best experience and service for employees, patients and visitors."

Editor's note: Becker's reached out to Morrison for comment and will post additional details as they become available.
