4 findings on first responders and mental health

Many first responders, including emergency medical technicians/paramedics and nurses, have experienced mental health issues, according to a University of Phoenix/Harris Poll survey.

For the survey, researchers asked 2,000 U.S. firefighters, police officers, EMT/paramedics and nurses questions related to mental health and their jobs.

Here are four survey findings.

1. The survey found 84 percent of firstresponders reported experiencing trauma in the workplace.

2. The majority of respondents (85 percent) also reported experiencing symptoms related to mentalhealthissues. These include lack of sleep (69 percent), anxiety (46 percent) and eating habit changes (38 percent).

3. More than 30 percent of respondents have been formally diagnosed with a mental health disorder, such as depression or post-traumatic stress disorder, according to the survey.

4. Sixty-nine percent of firstresponders reported mentalhealth services are seldom or never used at their workplace.
