University of California’s five large medical centers in San Diego, Irvine, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Davis are starting to cancel scheduled elective surgeries in the face of a two-day worker strike, according to a Los Angeles Times report.

About 13,000 UC members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299 are set to strike May 21 to 22. Striking workers include respiratory therapists, nursing aides, security guards and hospitality workers, among others.

The hospital’s emergency care will remain open, but several elective surgeries will be delayed until after the strike, according to the report. A union spokesman told the Los Angeles Times that in the case of medical emergencies, workers would treat patients and then return to the strike.

UC is “seeking an injunction” to stop the strike, but according to the report, both sides see a walkout as “likely.”
