About 97 percent of voting members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299 approved a potential strike. According to the union, “thousands” of votes were cast over a three-day period. Exact dates and duration of the strike have not been finalized, but the union can lawfully call a strike after providing a 10-day notice, according to the news release.
The union represents approximately 13,000 UC hospital employees, including respiratory therapists, nursing aides, security guards and hospitality workers, among others.
The union and the University of California have been in contract disputes over pension reforms.
University of California officials say the strike is an “attempt to divert attention from…the union’s refusal to sign on to the UC pension reforms,” according to a KPIX report.
