Earlier this month, the Union of American Physicians and Dentists notified the University of California Office of the President that a one-day strike would take place. The strike involved about 125 doctors and dentists at student health clinics at 10 UC campuses, according to a Los Angeles Times report.
At issue is the UC system’s alleged refusal to provide enough financial information on student health services so that UAPD may determine whether resources are being allocated well, Amol Doshi, MD, a staff physician at UC San Diego, told U-T San Diego. Dr. Doshi also noted physicians’ concerns in regard to staffing levels.
UC system spokeswoman Shelly Meron told the Los Angeles Times that university leaders “are disappointed” about the strike, and “the best way to resolve these issues is at the bargaining table, not at the picket line.”
The UAPD has said this was the first time in 25 years in which fully licensed physicians picketed a U.S. employer, according to the report.
